The Lagos-based “Afrocentric inspired” band The Cavemen is made up of bassist Kingsley Okorie and drummer Benjamin James. The Cavemen are the current torchbearers of the Highlife sound, which has deep origins in the history of African music.
The band promotes a style of music dubbed “Highlife Fusion,” a fusion of highlife, afrobeat, jazz, and soul, with a goal of reintroducing highlife to a new generation.
When the brothers reconnected following their studies in March 2018, The Cavemen became formally established. Since then, the duo has honed their sound by sharing the stage with well-known artists like Lady Donli, Asa, Bez, and Onyeka Onwenu.
In 2020, they both released their debut album, “Roots,” and their lead song, “Osondu.” With “Roots,” the band highlights the importance of our history. They won the 2020 Headies Award for Best Alternative Album.
They emphasize the value of appreciating the contributions made by those who came before us in each song they perform for us.
