Folarin Falana, better known by his stage name Falz, is a famous Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, media personality, filmmaker, and actor. He was born on October 27, 1990.
Before beginning his professional career as a musician in 2009, the Nigerian singer found his vocation in secondary school after founding a group named “The School Boys” with a classmate. After releasing the song “Marry Me,” which features vocals from Ladipoe and Yemi Alade, Falz gained further notoriety.
Currently, he is the owner of Bahd Guys Records, a small independent record company. 2014 saw the release of his debut album, Wazup Guy. Stories That Touch, his second album, was published in 2015.
In 2017, he released 27, and in 2019, Moral Instruction, his fourth studio album.
Early Life & Education
Falz was born on October 27, 1990, in the Lagos State local government district of Mushin. Fola Falana is the name of his sister.
Funmi and Femi Falana, well-known attorneys and human rights advocates, are his parents. After earning his degree from the Nigeria Law School in Abuja, he was admitted to the bar in 2012.
Falz finished his basic and secondary schooling at Olashore International School in Osun State and St. Leo’s Catholic basic School in Ikeja, respectively. He received his LLB with honors from the University of Reading in England, where he also attended school.
Career
Falz began playing the guitar while still a student in high school. He and a friend established “The School Boys” as their musical project. Shakara: The Mixtape, a collection of his recordings, was made available by him in 2009.
2011 saw Falz release the track “WazUp Guy,” followed by “High Class” and “Currency,” which helped him establish himself in the Nigerian music scene.
Falz was included on tooXclusive’s “Artistes To Watch in 2014” list on January 2, 2014. Wazup Guy, Falz’s debut studio album, was released on May 30, 2014. The CD included creations by a variety of artists, including Studio Magic, DJ Woske, Tin Tin, and Spellz.
Wazup Guy houses18 tracks with guest appearances from Olamide, Show Dem Camp, Phenom, and Yemi Alade. Some of the tracks are: See Me, Toyin Tomato, Senator, Right Now, Jessica, High Class, Marry Me, Oh God, The Advice, and Cool Parry, which was critically acclaimed by music critics.
On 31st January 2015, Falz returned with an official single titled ‘Ello Bae’. Actually, it was his first solo effort after the release of Wazup Guy, and it won him several awards. He was strategic about the music launch as it was launched just before the valentine’s season.
In 2015, Falz was nominated in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards for his chart-topping single “Marry Me“. It won him a nomination in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. He was also nominated in the “Best Rap Act of The Year” and “Best New Act to Watch” categories.
On 31 January 2015, he released a single titled “Ello Bae“, which won him a nomination in the “Best Street Hop Artiste of The Year” category at The Headies 2015.
On 3 November 2015, he announced the release of his second studio album, titled Stories That Touch, which was released on 17 November.
In 2016, Falz won “Best Actor in a Comedy Movie/Series” at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards for his role as Segun in Funke Akindele‘s TV series Jenifa’s Diary. In June 2016, Falz was voted the winner of the “Viewer’s Choice Best New International Act” category at the 2016 BET Awards.
On October 27, 2016, he collaborated with Simi to release Chemistry, a seven-track EP solely produced by Sess. Falz had previously worked with Simi on “Jamb Question” and “Soldier” singles.
On 27 October 2017, his 27th birthday, Falz released a new album titled 27 to celebrate the day. This was a surprise album, as it was not promoted before its release. It contained 17 tracks, including hit singles like “Bhad Baddo Baddest“, “Wehdone sir“, and “Something light“. It featured prominent music acts like Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy, Wande Coal, Maleek Berry, Sir Dauda, Medikal, Terry Apala, and Ycee.
The album was majorly produced by Sess as an in-house producer, with some tracks were done by Maleek Berry and studio magic. The album did very well, and it gained several awards and nominations, including a nomination for The Headies Award for Rap Album of the Year.
In May 2018, Falz released a music video titled “This Is Nigeria,” which was inspired by Childish Gambino‘s “This Is America“. It highlighted Nigerian issues, including corruption and bribery.
A few months later, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) outlawed the song on the grounds that it was vulgar. Falz responded, “If they ban this song, then I do not understand them because that song is definitely not a vulgar song,” when he was questioned. Falz, however, is suing NBC for N100,000,000.
Falz, who plays Quam in Tope Oshin’s film New Money, won “Best Supporting Actor” at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards on September 1 and made history by being the first Nigerian singer to win the ceremony twice.
Falz introduced House21TV as the name of his film production firm in August 2020. In addition to announcing his new film production firm, Falz used Instagram to introduce his brand-new comedy series, “Therapy,” which will only be available on YouTube.
Personal Life
Rumors circulated in the media that Simi was formerly Falz’s girlfriend before Simi wed Adekunle Gold. Many people learned Falz wasn’t dating her, unlike what certain media outlets had claimed, after she married Adekunle Gold.
Falz is unattached and socially single. He is married and currently childless.
