Flavour shares memories of his modest beginnings when he was unceremoniously removed from P-Square’s performance stage

Flavour, a Nigerian high-life musician, recounted his early days in the music industry.

He remembered an unforgettable performance where he had to give way to PSquare, who unfortunately are no longer a duo, to take the stage and entertain the audience instead.

On the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, released on August 18, Flavour discussed his early music career. Before joining the music industry, he had a background as a church choir conductor and drummer.

Later, he joined a band focusing on nurturing young musicians. Having been in the band for 13 years, he opted for a solo singing career.

Those days were incredibly challenging for him. Seeing certain artists inspired and challenged him to start making changes.

After leaving the band, I roamed the streets. The game’s difficulty escalated then. Although I was once in a stable musical environment, I now find myself in the streets.

I went from bar to bar performing. With over 5,000 songs at my disposal, I could entertain with my singing and playing.

At the City Centre in Enugu, the singer set up a regular performance spot open from 8 pm to 3 am. His fan base grew steadily over time. Despite shorter sets, larger artists elicited more audience enthusiasm.

30-minute sets leave crowd clapping and hailing artistes. I’m questioning the current situation. ‘He recalled asking, “Are we not the same artists?”‘

When P-Square came to promote “Temptation,” the artist looked back on that day as a pivotal moment in his life.

During his performance, Psquare unexpectedly appeared and interrupted him. The manager enthusiastically announced, “Hello!” Turn off your microphone and leave the stage.

I went somewhere and sat down, turning off the microphone.

As the twins performed, Flavour felt the intense vitality of the crowd. While watching, he pondered if their song was dissimilar to his.

Realizing the need to evolve from a musician into an artiste, he did so after this experience.

They produce their music in-house. This is the method. You’re solely a musician.

Deciding to switch from a musician to an artist proved more challenging than anticipated. To create an original sound, where should one begin: singing or playing an instrument?
