Patoranking, born Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie (27 May 1990), is a well-known Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter.

He began his musical career by working informally with Reggie Rockstone, Konga, XProject, and Slam. In 2010, he inked a record deal with K-Solo’s Igberaga Records, putting out “Up in D Club” through the label.

Following their collaboration on Timaya’s song “Alubarika,” Patoranking was accepted as a protégé by Dem Mama Records. He obtained a record deal with Foston Musik in February 2014 and dropped the tune “Girlie O,” which propelled him to fame. Together with Tiwa Savage, he remixed the Girlie O song.

Patoranking made the announcement that he has inked a distribution agreement with VP Records on February 9, 2015, through Instagram. He released the song Abule on September 28 ahead of the release of his album, which was planned for later in 2020.

The musician reportedly remarked in 2020 that he once received the idea for a song while playing football on a football field.

Early Life & Education

Despite having familial roots in Onicha, Ebonyi State, Patoranking was born and raised in Ijegun-Egba, Satellite Town. He turned 32 years old on May 27, 1990, the date of his birth.

Patoranking is an Ebonyi State native who was born and reared in Ijegun-Egba Satellite Town. Sharon Okorie and Raphael Okorie are his two siblings.

Later, he enrolled at Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School in Iponri after attending Citizen Comprehensive College in Epe, Lagos. Patoranking began his career in the performing arts by dancing in street jams and carnivals.

He said in a 2012 interview with Entertainment Express that a Jamaican musician he met at Lagos’ Alpha Beach gave him his stage name.

As far as musical influences go, Patoranking has named Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Lucky Dube, Chaka Demus, Majek Fashek, Blackky, Blackface, 2Baba, and Marvelous Benjy.

He described his music as a morally inclined variety of dancehall and claimed that it makes references to sociopolitical themes in the interview with Entertainment Express cited above.

Career

Patoranking released the song “Iya Bisi” in May 2012; it features Qdot and Kbaj. The song, which was created by Drumphase, combines dancehall with fuji. According to him, Qdot and Kbaj contributed to the music’s composition by exchanging ideas.

He simultaneously released the audio and video for “Alubarika” on September 12, 2013. Timaya sings on the track, which is titled “God’s Blessings” in its literal translation.

AJE Films produced “Alubarika”‘s music video, which lasted 4 minutes, 16 seconds. In a piece published by Victor Akande of The Nation, Patoranking said the song was a summation of his career as a musician and that it helped him gain exposure and collaborate with more well-known artists.

Patoranking parted ways with Dem Mama Records in February 2014 and inked a record deal with Foston Musik. Timaya said Patoranking departed his label and was never formally signed during an interview with Toolz on NdaniTV’s The Juice. Patoranking released the WizzyPro-produced song “Girlie O” on February 4th, 2014.

Moe Musa filmed and directed the song’s music video in London, and it was made public on February 5th, 2014. In the song video, Patoranking frees his neighbor from domestic abuse by communicating his deepest emotions to her.

The “Girlie O” (Remix) by Foston Musik featuring Tiwa Savage was released on May 19, 2014, to positive reviews. On MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 chart, it debuted at No. 9. As a fan of Patoranking’s music, Tiwa Savage told Ehiz of MTV Base that she had approached him about doing the remix. Moe Musa also filmed and directed the music video for “Girlie O” (Remix) in London.

“The fundamental winning components were not discarded on the new remix,” noted Joey Akan of Pulse Nigeria. They were kept and enhanced. Major work was done into the lyrics, while maintaining the pace, chorus, and energy.

Shaydee and Patoranking both appeared on Seyi Shay’s “Murda” song. Dokta Frabz created the song, which was made public on April 1st, 2014. The “Murda” music video was posted to Vevo on May 11, 2014. Meji Alabi handled the directing duties for JM Films.

On the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 list, Patoranking’s singles “Daniella Whine” and “My Woman, My Everything” charted. The former entered the list at No. 4 in May and peaked at No. 1 in June. The latter, “My Woman, My Everything,” also made an appearance on the chart and peaked at No. 2.
