Thato Kelvin Ledwaba, a South African performer, DJ, producer, and composer, goes by the stage name Kelvin Momo. The self-described “Soulful King” has built a solid reputation as a fantastic producer over the past few years by churning out songs and producing production mixes.
Born in Diepkloof, Soweto, in 1994, Kelvin stands out from the pack with his soulful, house-leaning amapiano tunes. He invented the style known as “private school amapiano,” which combines jazz, deep house, and lounge elements.
He collaborated with Luu Nineleven and DJ Stoks on the upbeat smash “Yelele” in 2019 and recorded the ambient “Abantu Bethu” with C.A. Souls. He was also prominently included on the influential label House Afrika’s “Mzansi House” compilation.
His 2020 album, “Momo’s Private School,” is propelled by flitting keys and opulent pads, swapping amapiano’s distinctive grit for a glossy shine and ending in a stone-cold masterpiece. The song is gaining traction and doing exceptionally well on streaming platforms.
His name will become synonymous with “private school” amapiano, a subgenre of amapiano that mixes deep-house and jazz influences, as more listeners become aware of his work.
