Sho Madjozi is a rapper and musician from Limpopo, South Africa, whose true name is Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif. She was the first female South African singer to win Best New International Act at the 2019 BET Awards. Additionally, she was the recipient of the Newcomer and Female Artist Award at the 2019 Sun City South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
The daughter of Rosemary Phaweni and Marc Wegerif, who operated a non-governmental organization designed to help people with their land claims, Madjozi was born on May 9, 1992, in Shelly Village, Elim, Limpopo. Her Swedish father is of European ancestry, while her mother is of African ancestry. She was primarily raised by her mother after her early parents’ divorce. Madjozi’s mother’s side gives her a half-sister. Madjozi had the chance to travel with her father because Marc visited specific areas of the continent frequently; when she was a teenager, she accompanied him to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he worked for the humanitarian organization Oxfam. She also traveled to Senegal for a while.
Madjozi was given the opportunity to pursue creative writing and African studies at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, after completing high school in Tanzania. She began composing poetry while living in the US and went by the name MayaThePoet. The poetry dealt with racial issues, identity, and politics. Upon her return to South Africa, Madjozi enrolled in a fellowship program at the University of South Africa in Johannesburg and began arranging songwriting projects for other regional musicians. Under the alias “Sho Madjozi,” she started rapping and writing songs after she got back to South Africa. After collaborating with rapper Okmalumkoolkat on the song “Ngiyashisa Bhe” and the number-one single “Gqi,” Madjozi became well-known.
She is also a poet, an actress, and a writer.
