His path to fame started when he was signed to Jonzing World, a division of Mavin Records, after being discovered by A&R and talent manager D’Prince. After releasing his debut album, Rema, which features hits like Iron Man and Dumebi, Rema established himself as a major force in the music industry.

The latter song ended up on former US President Barack Obama’s summer playlist. 2019’s The Headies saw him take home the coveted Next Rated Artist honor.

Adaptable musical Rema, a 22-year-old Nigerian rapper, songwriter, and singer, is the stage name of Divine Ikubor.

Rema, who was raised in a Christian household and was born in the year 2000 in Benin, Edo State, shot to fame with the smash hit “Dumebi” released by Jonzing World, owned by D’Prince and a label under Mavin Records, which is at the top of the charts in the majority of African nations.

Career

Rema didn’t start his higher education studies right away after finishing high school. While he waited for luck to shine on him, he improved as a musician and refined his sound during this time.

In 2018, after posting a freestyle video of D’Prince’s song Gucci Gang on Instagram, his prayers were finally granted. D’Prince saw the video when it went viral on the social media platform and was immediately taken by Rema’s talent.

After that, D’Prince—who is also an A&R and a talent manager—got in touch with Rema and started developing the young performer. He signed Rema to Mavin Records’ subsidiary Jonzing World in 2019.

Rema released his first project, an EP titled Rema, months after joining the Mavin Family. Iron Man, Corn, Why, and Dumebi are the four songs that make up the EP’s four tracks. The EP quickly climbed to the top spot on Apple Music Nigeria after its release. The two most popular singles from the album are Dumebi and Iron Man.

To the delight of Rema’s expanding fan base, the music video for Dumebi was released on May 21. The video has received more than 50 million views on YouTube since its release. Ademola Falomo is the director and photographer of the video.

Rema did not wait for the excitement surrounding the success of his debut EP to die down before releasing his follow-up project, also in 2019, titled Bad Commando. Songs like Bad Commando, Rewind, Boulevard, American Love, and Spiderman are included on the EP. Rema’s fame soared thanks to this second endeavor, which brought him new admirers both domestically and abroad.

He won the Next Rated Artist award at the 2019 The Headies, besting competitors Fireboy DML and Joeboy. This was a recognition of his talent as a great songwriter and singer.

With hits like Beamer (Bad Boys), Woman, Rainbow, Fame, Ginger Me, Peace Of Mind, and Alien in 2020, he completely overtook the music industry. So, when he was nominated for the Best Viewers’ Choice: International Act award at the 2020 BET Awards, it wasn’t a surprise to music fans. Along with Wizkid, he was the third Nigerian in the category.
