Tyla Laura Seethal, known simply as Tyla, is a singer and songwriter from South Africa. She was born on January 30, 2002. She was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2021, she signed a record deal with Epic Records after her first song, “Getting Late,” with Kooldrink became popular in her home country. After her 2023 song “Water” hit the top ten in the UK and made Tyla the first South African solo artist to reach the US Billboard Hot 100 in 55 years, she became famous all over the world.

Childhood and Schooling
Seethal was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in a family with Zulu, Indian, and Mauritian backgrounds. She identified as Colored. After finishing Edenglen High School in 2019, she became the head of culture. She started by sharing her own songs and singing popular ones on Instagram and sending them to important people in the music world. Her first manager noticed what she was doing and arranged her first recording sessions. Before she fully committed to her music career, she was studying mining engineering.

MUSIC CAREER
Tyla’s first song, “Getting Late,” was produced by Kooldrink and came out in late 2019. It became very popular all over the country. In 2022, at the South African Music Awards, her music video for the song was nominated for Music Video of the Year. After that, she signed a recording deal with Epic Records in the US, working together with Fax Records. She then released two more singles called “To Last” and “Overdue. ”

After Tyla released her song “Been Thinking” in 2023, she performed on stage for the first time at a Dolce & Gabbana party during Milan Fashion Week. This helped her reach the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for the first time. Pitchfork’s Heven Haile described it as “a cool dance song that reminds you of the catchy pop and R&B music from the mid-2000s by Ciara and Rihanna. ” After that, Tyla went on tour in Europe with Chris Brown as his opening act for the Under the Influence Tour.

She released the song “Girl Next Door” in May 2023, featuring Ayra Starr, a Nigerian singer. Then, in July 2023, she released the song “Water” as the first single from her upcoming extended play. The song became very popular, reaching the top of the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart and making it into the top 10 in places like New Zealand, the Netherlands, and the UK, especially after a popular dance challenge on TikTok. “Water” also entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 67, making Tyla the youngest South African to achieve this and the first in 55 years, since Hugh Masekela’s song “Grazing in the Grass” in 1968.
