Dutch winger Anwar El Ghazi’s contract with Bundesliga side Mainz has been terminated after he appeared to promote Palestine in an October post.

Recall that Anwar El Ghazi has appeared in three games since moving to Germany, joining Mainz on a free transfer in the summer.

The club suspended him on October 17th, following a post he had made regarding the ongoing violence between Israel and Gaza. It was assumed that the post was pro-Palestinian, therefore he had to remove it.

After first declaring on Monday, October 30, that they had lifted the suspension imposed on him due to the social media post, Mainz made a shocking U-turn and declared on Friday, November 3, that his contract was being terminated with “immediate effect.”

The club’s statement read, “FSV Mainz 05 is ending the contractual relationship with Anwar El Ghazi and terminating the player with immediate effect on Friday. The club is taking this measure in response to the player’s statements and posts on social media.”

It should be noted that Eugen Salomon, a Jew, founded Mainz, and the stadium is currently named in his honor.

The Nazis expelled the club’s founder in 1933, and he perished in the Holocaust in 1942.

During World War Two, Nazi Germany carried out the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of around six million Jews, including him.

Because of the club’s relationship with Israel, they were able to cancel Anwar El Ghazi’s contract as a result of his supposed pro-Palestinian remarks on social media.

After his contract was terminated, El Ghazi took to social media to write: “‘Stand for what is right, even if it means standing alone’”.

He added: “The loss of my livelihood is nothing when compared to the hell being unleashed on the innocent and vulnerable in Gaza.”
